Architectural Technologist – Running on air

Thales, the earliest researcher into electricity
Image via Wikipedia

Ok so this sound a bit far fetched, but there are some serious high brain thinkers looking at compressed air for cars rather than using electricity, It solve the basic battery problem and all the pollution they cause. So is it time to look at it for construction and running certain items about the house, may be, read the article in The Ecconomist and see just what they have to say, I fr one think it’s a great idea. PV cells running smalll compresors, to store energy !

Architectural Technologist – Huge Holes in the Earth: Open-Pit Mines Seen From Space

The title is not what it seems, ok the holes are just huge, but I went onto Google Earth and found several of these holes and it all depends on the altitude these photos were taken. Still all very interesting and definitely worth a look. Go to the Wired site and have a look at these massive scares we have inflicted on the planet.

I attended the Brum Be2camp event, recently and deeply regret not being able to attend the London show 7-8 October 2009, but a lot of the daily presentations are online at the Be2camp web site Have a wonder about, the site, the actual videos are often quite dark or grainy, but there all free and well worth viewing.

Architectural Technologist – Piano stairs

October 22, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Volkswagen Passenger Cars

I found this recently, its….. well its novel, the stairs have been converted over night to look and get this sound like a piano.

Piano Stairs is part of a Volkswagen viral video marketing campaign called “The Fun Theory.” Their theory? “Fun can change behavior for the better.” They set-forth to prove their theory by turning plain, old stairs into a fully functioning keyboard and filming the public’s reaction to it. Not only is the video an interesting approach to creating social change, but it’s fun to watch, as well.

Follow the link to youtube and watch the other like minded videos as well….. ! the bin is just cool

Architectural Technologist – Interbuild

Tamsin Slatter setting up on the Vectorworks stand

Is this the way to spend a morning, did I get what I wanted from my visit to interbuild, not a chance, it was the most poorly set up and badly attended show I have ever been to, is it a result of the market place, or are manufacturers looking for alternative ways to spend their advertising money. A little of the alternatives and a huge pinch of the market conditions I think, but overall I thought it was a particularly huge waste of my time. Perhaps the only redeeming feature was the IT area, and the CU stand, were I managed to see the Vectorworks 2010 presentation from Tamsin Slatter.

Can I claim any CPD, well yes, but not a lot, I did see some products that might just qualify, such as a very poor stand on solar PV panels with a chap so board, no thinking on it, I will not claim any CPD from this trip.

Architectural Technologist – Timber Kissing gate

Kissing gate triangle

I know I have done the before, but one of the items I had to pass through to get to the Roman fort at Birdoswald was this fine example of a new kissing gate, in its basic form its a straight square kissing gate, but the designer has inserted a triangle line of timber to stop the sheep having any chance of escape.
More photos are now on the Scays Flickr account

Architectural Technologist – Model engineering

October 17, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

I have spent the most delightful day at the Midlands model engineering show just south of Leamington Spa, and was this anything to do with Architecture or construction I hear you ask, no ,not a bit, it ws shear indulgence on my part. I went to see some showman tractors and fairground equipment, there is just something about them that makes the hairs on the back of neck, stand on end. The quality of the models is just exceptional, if you get down to eye level, its like being next to the original. I took some film of some of the bigger moving models, and a lot of the stands, so I thought for the first post today I would share the movies. Theres no CPD, no construction other than the scale world of models,  but think of this, someone is still drawing these models up in CAD. I just hope that the package of choice amongst these modelers is not Turbocad, I saw it on a stand.
