Autodesk Wins Round 2
It's ostensibly just a small skirmish on the flank, but one can't help but be morbidly fascinated after reading the docket history of the battle between Autodesk and Open Design Alliance that took place in a Phoenix court this month. Autodesk essentially got what they wanted, and in the end ODA isn't much worse off than when they started – but there is a lot of drama packed into this short detour.

One can sense pandemonium in the ODA camp as court ordered deadlines loomed. On September 15, they submitted documents with missing attachments, then resubmitted with one correct and one incorrect attachment, then finally resubmitted again, only to get their wrists slapped for filing documents that they did not have permission to file in the first place. One wonders if the outcome might have been different were it not for "the abusive length of the motion for protective order" that the judge poignantly derides in his order. – IntelliCAD

AutoCAD 2010 Sticky Ribbon Panels

September 28, 2009 in AutoCAD, CAD, Revit

sticky ribbon panels I found about this earlier today on Shaan blog. Now we can tear off ribbon panel and floats in your drawing area. Similar to toolbars.

Having ribbon interface sometimes so annoying when we have to move to different tabs frequently. So I can just tear off some panels I use frequently, and stick to home tab.

This feature is also available in Revit Architecture 2010, and I believe all Autodesk product 2010.

How to tear it off? Just click on panel title, hold and drag it to your drawing area.

panel title

There are some options available in this ribbon panel:

ribbon panel options

  1. Click on your ribbon tab title will expand and show all tools available in that panel.
  2. Return panel to ribbon
  3. Toggle orientation. By default the panel orientation is horizontal, you can change it to vertical by clicking this button.

You can also drag and drop the panel to return it to ribbon. This panel will be placed back to where it belongs. For example, palettes panel will be placed on view tab, no matter what tab is active. We can’t move a panel from one tab to another with this trick. You have to do it through CUI if you want to do that.

Autodesk Products Issue when Norton Installed

September 16, 2009 in AutoCAD, CAD, Revit

symantec_logo

I found two issues lately. My customer have problem with their AutoCAD 2008 after they install Norton 360. Lucky for him, Symantec provide a hotfix for this issue.

Later another customer have problem with their Inventor 2010. It was Norton Internet Security that cause this. This is an old issue, since Inventor 11. But it seems it’s not fixed yet. But the solution is not that difficult: uninstall and reinstall Norton.

In my curiosity, I tried to find other issue related to Norton applications. Well, it seems a lot of them cause issues with Autodesk products. You can try to search using keyword ‘norton’ in Autodesk knowledge base. Here is what I found.

I know some antivirus can be conflicted with Autodesk products, not only Norton. But seeing that result is kind of scare me.

Inventor ilogic and Far

September 10, 2009 in AutoCAD, CAD, Revit

As we continue moving forward with our development of the FAR Process we have been digging deeper into automating the creation of Revit families from Inventor. Inventor iLogic (a free product add-in for Autodesk subscription users) will play a huge role in the ability to make this happen. I look at iLogic as a ‘rules based’ logic that is attached to the models within Inventor. To me, this is one of the best moves Autodesk has made in a while. I look at iLogic as a tool that is very simple to use but very powerful – oh yeh, there is even a help document with it.

The ability to return and pass data to outside applications and databases is one of the true powers of iLogic. The way we intend to use iLogic for the FAR Process is only one method for using this ‘rules based’ tool. Once you understand how this tool works, its use will be limited only by your imagination.

I know we are only scratching the surface when it comes to utilizing the capabilities of iLogic for our use with the FAR Process. iLogic is worth looking at for the capability to put rules on any or all parts and assemblies, as it will only make your model that much smarter.

Contact us if you are interested in scheduling a demonstration of the FAR Process using Inventor iLogic.

Interesting

September 10, 2009 in AutoCAD, CAD, Revit

One of my last FAR demos was quite interesting. The gentleman suggested I should just create the content and sell it to Autodesk Seek so he could download it for free. It goes without saying, he was missing the point of what we are trying to do with the development of the FAR Process.

However, his comment got me thinking and recalling Autodesk’s last try at providing data in the ‘90′s. Does anyone remember PartSpec? I remember getting that CD and saying, ‘Right, like I am going to use this junk?’ and it was a complete utter failure. It is my opinion they began heading down the same path with the way they have started Autodesk Seek and how they are spending incredible amounts of money to clean it up. My hat is off to them for trying.

I’ve also been thinking, ‘Why is Autodesk spending so much money on this endeavor?’ I truly believe they are trying to monopolize the market in order to gain the market share, which in the end, they will be able to raise the price of their software – what do you think?
