Brick coursing

I always take a photo of any job I have to survey to measure just how many bricks there are the the set measure. in this case it was 6 courses to 420mm so any photo I have taken of the exterior, I can get a pretty good idea of heights of window cills, what ever, even eaves heights.

Whilst browsing the twitter late last night, I happen to read this excellent article on Sketching, ot rather a new book that has sketches in it, via the Daily Dose of Architecture web site, it just reminded me again of my conversation with Jon Pickup od Archoncad, and the importance of sketching,

The author quotes “Books like this one from Moleskine are timely reminders of how digital tools can’t replace all traditional ones, particularly pen and paper. For example, the research for my book is documented via a mix of spreadsheets, digital map overlays, digital photos, and a notebook (a Muji, sorry Moleskine). The last is a collage of notes, sketches, and pasted images, an ideal canvas for me for jotting down ideas at home, on the train, in front of a building, wherever I may be. But my research cannot exist without the digital components, and I’d also have a hard time limiting myself to just the bytes and bits.”

So true, the CPD here is get the sketchbook out and try, I have confessed to my lack of artistic ability, but I’ll try and see what comes.

I seem to be finding a number of interesting site, that are not in English, and have found that Firefox has some interesting plugins to help translate these quite successfully, with little of no effort from me. Check out the video below

Found this little snippet on Change Paradigms in Building Culture – Blog action day 2009, via the Anarchitecture blog I think we have it in us as Architectural Technologists to specify sustainably, most of us are now trying hard to do so, theres plenty of help, but do we question the running and powering of the buildings we design, you’ll notice I said power, for heating, lighting and running the essential kit of most modern buildings. So perhaps the CPD here is a little research into power supply, is it sustainable, should you be using PV or solar, more. Does the client need educating, will your HV chaps help. all good ground for research I think. for both small domestic and higher value projects alike. Also remeber that what ever you specifie, might not get used, its an old problem and time it was stopped.

Thales, the earliest researcher into electricity
Image via Wikipedia

Ok so this sound a bit far fetched, but there are some serious high brain thinkers looking at compressed air for cars rather than using electricity, It solve the basic battery problem and all the pollution they cause. So is it time to look at it for construction and running certain items about the house, may be, read the article in The Ecconomist and see just what they have to say, I fr one think it’s a great idea. PV cells running smalll compresors, to store energy !

The title is not what it seems, ok the holes are just huge, but I went onto Google Earth and found several of these holes and it all depends on the altitude these photos were taken. Still all very interesting and definitely worth a look. Go to the Wired site and have a look at these massive scares we have inflicted on the planet.

Tamsin Slatter setting up on the Vectorworks stand

Is this the way to spend a morning, did I get what I wanted from my visit to interbuild, not a chance, it was the most poorly set up and badly attended show I have ever been to, is it a result of the market place, or are manufacturers looking for alternative ways to spend their advertising money. A little of the alternatives and a huge pinch of the market conditions I think, but overall I thought it was a particularly huge waste of my time. Perhaps the only redeeming feature was the IT area, and the CU stand, were I managed to see the Vectorworks 2010 presentation from Tamsin Slatter.

Can I claim any CPD, well yes, but not a lot, I did see some products that might just qualify, such as a very poor stand on solar PV panels with a chap so board, no thinking on it, I will not claim any CPD from this trip.
