I subscribe to loads of podcasts but perhaps the hubblecast is one of the best, the photos that this hunk os science floating in space sends to us is nothing more than stunning, and the narative that Dr jay gives is just great. No CPD here through just interesting Science. Search iTunes for Hubblecast to find more.

Leo Laporte - Let's Wiggle Stuff

I have posted the This Week In Google podcast, before and will continue to do so, it’s just excellent CPD, ok so it concentrates on Google, but it’s so important to me in my every day life and work, that I just have to keep up with the constant changing goal post, that is google,  This week in Google part of the ever growing Leo Laporte empire is just the best show about, So Leo was away this week, that does not detract from the quality of this show, I even stayed up late last night, UK time 22:15 to see the start,on the impressive twit TV

Architectural Technologist – iPhone stand

October 12, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

iPhone stand 2

Ok so this is not Architectural CPD, but its one of those neet little tips that just makes life easy, and this stand for the iPhone is so simple to make, the author Jason Fitzpatrick,   uses plastic acrylic sheet, but I used a piece of card from an amazon book delivery, its quite still and did the job just as well. I suppose if you really want 10 mins of CPD you could draw out the profiles ,print to an A4 sheet and cut out, but that’s really grabbing time.

The photo today is the one i made, it works, don’t mock ! more photos on the flickr site

Architectural Technologist – Climate change

Want to know why you should be doing all you can to prevent the climate getting any worse, then log onto the extreme Ice Survey site and watch what they are doing and view some of the results. The technology is not a bad subject to look at either. Cameras that can withstand 160 mph winds and temps of -40 C and can take more than 4000 images per year.

Architectural Technologist – UK’s New Wind-Powered Vehicle Breaks Previous Land Speed Record!

October 2, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Ralph DePalma in his Packard '905' Special in ...
Image via Wikipedia

You may wonder why mention this on an Architectural Technologists CPD web site, easy, is innovation, design, at its best, its all about looking at a problems from alternative angles and using new science, materials to achieve the almost impossible, oh and its British, sorry for mentioning it here when I aspire to a global audience, but it does fell kind of good.

So whats it al about, well it’s the breaking of the wind powered land speed record, and in a machine that may not be ready for mass production, but it certainly shows all the aspects of innovation that I look for and seek.

I got this from a twitterer emlink3 who pointed me to a site  called stumbleupon.com now I get so many tweets it  is hard to sieve out things that are interesting, particularly when they are not in my usual tagged search’s so its good I saw it. but go to the site and read the blurb, but more important watch the video, its all there. also go to the web page http://greenopolis.com/ theres more to see and read on green issues here, nice 1/2 green CPD

As for the phot, it all starts here,

Architectural Technologist – CIRIA – Sharing knowledge, building best practice

October 2, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

A detail of a dry stone wall in the Yorkshire ...
Image via Wikipedia

I have known about CIRIA for years, yet I hardly access the site, perhaps thats because it was unhelpful or the logon was painful, I have received their paper communication also for ages, and apart from certain items it was uninspiring, yet something just made me look at this again this morning, and I had a pleasant shock, the site has become, well interesting, I received in the post the usual paper CIRIA magazine, and after thumbing through it, I thought, this is not half bad, and logged onto the site, now this is where I often give up on old log in, but the system found me and allowed me to entre, I’m more than impressed at this stage.

The site is quite easy to navigate, and there is an awful lot to look at, I went on to the Knowledge base, and the Construction and Technology base, its impressive,  but here the pain starts, there is a ranking system employed were some information is paid for, some restricted to members, ie you have paid for a better class of membership. still its there and if your really interested, you’ll pay up.

Overall the site is worth a visit, there is an awful lot of information here, but the payment system means I could not access a lot. but I did manage to look at some things, like dry stone walls, not a huge leap in technology, but interesting !. I’m going to claim 1/2 hour of ok CPD

Architectural Technologist – Tom Greggs Convert to lines

October 1, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Tom Greggs has issued yet another really good blog on his site convert to lines, it’s packed with useful Vectorworks stuff, a list of items includes:
• Refreshed video group: newest video added
• How Transom and Clerestory windows work
SketchUp expert puts Cheney WA on map
• Official Guide “Getting Started with Vwks 2010” gets it right
• Digital Terrain Modeling advice
• SketchUp on steroids: the future of Vwks?
• More Resource Library points of view

You really should not miss Toms Seattle news letter, its always interesting and just good fun to read. I can easily see a good 1/2 hour CPD just reading and following the links Tom provides, but follow up correctly and do a little more research, and an hour of quality CPD is easily established.

Architectural Technologist – Wall Insertion Options for Symbols Vectorworks 2010

September 28, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Again as we wait for 2010 to ship, why not have a look at some of the new features, this one is from Jon Pickup of Archoncad, its a small but useful tip to control the insertion point of any object. Now talking with Jon this morning, he tells me that as soon as we have all upgraded to 2010, we will need to update our symbol files to take account of this new feature, and clever Jon has made a short Vectorscript tool to make this a simple one click operation, and he has allowed me to almost give it away, I will be uploading this to the download file tab as soon as I get Vectrworks 2010, for the small price of your email address., keep looking out for updates on this over the next week or so.

Architectural Technologist – Robo Uncycle

September 26, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

robocycle

This just has to be a winner, its innovation at its best, I love this, the idea, the way its put together, and the thinking that just must have gone on to come up with something so ordinary, It has robotics all over it, but its no more than a wheel chair, on as the name implies a Robo Unicycle. Any cpd, there must be, follow through the idea of gyro devise, battery storage, the CAD drawing of it, but innovation has to be the best bet,
