In a news item sent out today from Building magazine, they announce that Foster & partners are bidding to build in outer space. After dominating the architecture scene for 40 years, Norman Foster seems to have decided that the world is not enough: his practice has joined a European consortium to look into how future structures could be built on the Moon.  So get your CV uptodate and add that all important conceptual construction of moon base alfa

I think this is one piece of Technology, we should all be looking at, its well,,,,,, see for your self, I have watched this twice and each time I can see great new applications for Architecture and the detailing of buildings,. Microsoft is not one of my favourite companies, I don’t have any of their software on any of my machines, but this is truly amazing and I could well be tempted if the price comes into my area of affordability.

I had a link from Jon Pickup of Archoncad recently, he has just converted some existing plans available on envirographics to Vectorworks fomat, they are for the hot climates, but might be a nice addition to any library if you want to show an exotic plants. As far as I know there are two available, Callistemon Kings Park Special, and a fern, see photo. both are free to download. which are alo available in Photoshop, Archicad, Sketchup and a couple more formats.

Architectural Technologist – The Value of Building Information Modeling: Can We Measure the ROI of BIM?

September 7, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

University of Southern California
Image via Wikipedia

A very recent article from AECBYTES, has some interesting and sole searching questions for BIM in Architecture, I like BIM, I think its in its early years, and needs to mature a little, but it offers great hope in stream lining the design process, and bringing cost benfits to all who embrace it, but this article from

Dr. Burcin Becerik-Gerber and Samara Rice
University of Southern California

Has some interesting thoughts, do I agree with them, not entirely,  they are right in certain aspects, but I think they are being to harsh, on a growing method of producing new information routes from the design process, its still has its growing pains, many confuse it with 3D CAD, and this is not so, BIM can come from many sources, and may be some disaplines find it more usefull, and certainly many will be looking at the ROI, but I suspect many will be looking ahead to find better ways to impliment this new and exciting concept.

Still the article is well worth a read and by the time you have read, digested the info, done a little research, and thought about it, I can see a good 1 hour CPD claim.

Architectural Technologist – video lectures from the world’s top scholars.

Computer science

As the title says, a lot of universities have put lots of their lecture on the net, and Stamford is a classic example, this site academicearth has just loads of links to Stamford and other universities, The list is comprehensive and interestingly there is no Architecture, well not that I can see, I ended up on the Computer Science list and this lecture below, believe me there are loads to see, this guy can sure speak, its the first lecture of a series of lectures, and he has some house keeping to do, but once he’s past this, the real info starts to flow. This is over an hour of top quality computer science lecturing, and as such well worth the hour CPD I will claim.

Architectural Technologist – Geocashing on the iphone

You may wonder were the CPD is on this article,,,,, hang in there, I hope you will see the benefit of this app.

Last week I attended the very excellent BE2camp in Birmingham, and was amazed at the presentations on the open source map project, which I have also picked up on Leo Laports TWITS podcast, I think the application bears much weight within our work, so when i saw this, article on Geocashing,  I thought, is there an app that will allow us Technologists to help out, currently it seems not, but if not mentioned, then we never will have the opensource mapping app for the iphone, If there were one, I certainly would use it to plot areas of interest, such as a building site  for houses or an office block, roads etc, now do you see were I am coming from, the technology has many openings for us, now the next question is, can I import the data into Vectorworks, and I leave that as an open question to people like Joh Pickup and the like

Architectural Technologist – Deer Fencing

August 19, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Deer Fencing

I saw this style of fencing for the first time today, whilst on a visit to Charlecote Park just south of Stratford upon Avon, and thought just what the heck is going on, the whole park is surrounded  by this fencing, its all over the place. It look weired, but as the blurb says, This medieval design is used to enclose deer parkland. its made from green oak split roughly by hand. The uneven pattern of the fence top makes it difficult for the deer to judge the height, which stops them from trying to jump it. Does it work well its been around for the best part of 500 years, and it still there doing its job, the deer are running wild in the park even now, so I have to say yes it does work, and its just another style of fence I thought you might like to see

I have added it to my fencing design portfolio and added a 1/4 hour CPD
