Another AutoCAD malware warning

August 11, 2009 in AutoCAD, CAD

Shaan Hurley has posted some useful information about another AutoCAD-based virus that is doing the rounds, and I strongly suggest you read it. However, I have some reservations about the solution that is posted there and in the Autodesk knowledgebase.

The LISP code suggested will delete any files called acad.vlx or logo.gif that are located in [...]

CADcaster Welcomes The AutoCAD Gazette Site to the CADcast!

CADcaster logo

Welcome to the CADcast!

The AutoCAD Gazette is a weblog written by Bob Ford. His About Me info says:

“I have been working with AutoCAD since version 1.14. I am a Certified Technical Trainer Plus (CTT+) with Comptia. I received Top Instructor Awards from Autodesk for 1997, 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006. I have taught hundreds (2000+) students in the 20 years that I have been a Certified Autodesk Instructor. Thanks for stopping by. Don’t forget to sign up and let me know you were here. Thanks!”

We welcome The AutoCAD Gazette to the CADcast and hope that everyone enjoys their posts. Follow the links to their site when you find an interesting article, or visit The AutoCAD Gazette site right now!

Defpoints Layer

August 6, 2009 in AutoCAD, CAD, Revit

old_fabric_1 When you create a new AutoCAD file, can you see this layer? No, unless your template file has it defined. This layer will be created automatically by AutoCAD when you create dimension. Try to create a dimension, then look again in your layer list. What is this layer for?

This layer is used for definition points when you place dimensions in AutoCAD. This layer by default is set not to be plotted. Don’t mind this layer. Why worry about one layer when you can create virtually unlimited layers?

The problem is, many use this layer when creating objects they don’t want to plot. Viewports for example. This is practical before, we can’t define a no-plot layer. Now that we can create a no-plot layer, we should avoid using this. Why?

Layer defpoints is somehow linked to Layer 0. When we freeze or thaw layer 0, you can’t modify objects in layer defpoints. You probably know it, but someone who receive your file might not.

The other reason is, when you run audit, all objects that’s not definition points will be removed to a new layer: $AUDIT-BAD-LAYER. You can read the explanation here. There is no explanation whether this will make your files corrupted or not. But if audit treat it as ‘bad object’ then it must be a good reason for it. You don’t want to see the ‘deadly’ fatal error message, do you?

Set All Your Objects Properties Back to ByLayer

August 6, 2009 in AutoCAD, CAD, Revit

old_fabric_1 I don’t like when I receive drawings with the properties overridden to other than ByLayer. It’s a bit hard to distinguish between layers when people do that. There are many ways to change those properties back to ByLayer. We can select all objects and set the properties to ByLayer or using Match Properties.

But it will be a problem when it has blocks that also have it’s properties overridden. AutoCAD actually has a very handy tool for this purpose: SETBYLAYER. You can type it in command line/ dynamic input or accessing menu modify>change by layer. Don’t ask me where is it in AutoCAD 2010, haven’t found it yet.

You can see that this tool will change Color, Linetype, Lineweight, and Material back to ByLayer. You can change this, of course. For example, you want to change the color and lineweight to bylayer, but don’t want to change the rest of the properties.

You can also see that this tool can change ByBlock to ByLayer. And you can also change objects inside blocks!

Command: SETBYLAYER
Current active settings: Color Linetype Lineweight Material
Select objects or [Settings]:
Specify opposite corner: 167 found
Select objects or [Settings]:
Change ByBlock to ByLayer? [Yes/No] :
Include blocks? [Yes/No] :
167 object modified.

Creating Sketch From Your AutoCAD Drawing

August 6, 2009 in AutoCAD, CAD, Revit

autocad sketch  Images on the left looks like hand-drawn sketch (you might have to click on the image to see the larger image). It’s actually an AutoCAD drawing, with a little tweak on visual styles. This is from a sample file included in AutoCAD 2009 installation.

AutoCAD has this capabilities since AutoCAD 2007. When Autodesk made major changes on AutoCAD 3D modeling. Let’s see how we can do this!

Open your visual styles manager palettes. Create a new visual styles (you don’t want to mess your existing visual styles!). Give an appropriate name for it. Apply this visual style to your viewport.

Now on the edge modifiers group, activate overhanging edge and jitter edge. Tweak the overhang value and jitter if necessary.

Visual Styles Manager

You should see the effect immediately! You can apply this to any existing visual styles, except for 2D wireframe. You can also plot this effect to your plotter!

Don’t cheat if your lecturer told you to sketch your design!

Job Hunting Tips From The CAD Geek

July 29, 2009 in AutoCAD, CAD

jobsearch Today was my first day as the Technical Product Manager for Education Reseller, Ronald A. Williams. Moving from a private engineering practice to a reseller, I certainly have a lot to learn, but I figure we can discuss that another day. Instead, I thought it would be fitting to look back on my job [...]
