Architectural Technologist – Good design

To appreicate good design you have to see good design, you have to feel it and see peoples reaction to good design, but when you see good design, it feels you, it sends a feeling of completeness, you look at the screen , objects, pictures and feel satisfied, something inside says ,,,,,,, nice.

And its this feeling I experienced recently when I followed up on a twitter follow request . Now its the norm for me to follow up on all requests, and to be honest, I just don’t like a lot of the requests and I just ignor them, and some I think ok well follow that, but some, I spend time on, there is something that invites me in, something that attracts me and in this particular case something attracted me, , was it the logo, because thats all there was on the twitter request, probably, but I followed up, and was more than pleased at the time I spent on the Maveric Digital web site.

It loads with 3 dimentions of visual and audible stimulation, an inital grab of the logo centraly placed in a black background moving to the side, with a slight but audiable wisp of sound to reveal a menu and about screen  placed again on a black background. the crisp clean white font standing out and immediately readable, not drtracted by other icons or graphics, and as you move the mouse, more sound, to indicate movement and more information., clicking on an menu item again brings a wisp of sound and a crips transformation to the new screen. I am taken in, and theirs to do with as they wish.

To the right are displayed the slightly dimmed logos of companies they obviously deal with , IBM, Bombay Saphire, and many more that fade in and out, offering a glimpse of the clients that have paid for good design. The logos not detracting from the main screen but gently showing their presence.

To the left a bright look at me picture of current projects that says look at me, we are currently busy with………..

You leave feeling as though you want to employ them for all your design work, but alas in my case, completely out of  my budget range, disappointed, yes, but dissatisfied, no, I have been shown good design, of the highest level.

Architectural Technologist – Dropbox ap for the iPhone

Dropbox App

Well at long last, I saw a note via my Email to say that the new Dropbox app is out for the iphone, I am very pleased this is a long awaited app that will help on the move, logging in is so simple, just entre your email address, and your password and all my files are shown. Just as a test I dropped a multi page pdf generated by Vectorworks into my drop box and seconds later its there, I opened it up and all pages are working fine, zoom in in the normal way and line come into focus within less than a second, excellent, and a great way to have all your current project pdf drawings live.

Want to try it out, link via the advert on the side,  its well worth the small effort to gain access, and for a small user its free.

Architectural Technologist – Small Timber Frame Project

I got an interesting email from Webnash Design and build recenty on a timber-framed project they are engaged in, its not so much the design, more the construction technique I like, a very good set of photos to wander across, from design drawings to rendered drawings to the final dry fit in their yard, to the actual site assembly, plus a whole heap more. Worth 1/2 hour CPD of my time, just looking at the detail and the jointing methods, fortunately the photos are good enough to zoom in and see the detail.

Architectural Technologist – Google Wave

I have heard , watched and read so much about Google Wave, that I can’t wait for it to be launched, and if the gossip sites have it right, then it’s going to be released on the 30-09-09 and watch email change.

In fact watch many exchanges of information systems change, as people see the way Wave works, I can see the filing and drawing exchange of Architecture change

Architectural Technologist – Photo storage

One of the most disc hungry activities any office will have to overcome is that of photos, I seem to remember that my last major office, had loads of storage via servers, but we constantly had to thin out site photos because the server was full, CD’s were packed out and stored in a files for some use later, what a waste, when for just no cost Google Picasa or Flickr could have be used,

I like Flickr, just because the writing package I use Zemanta, which is a WordPress Google gmail and Firefox add-on, works with Flickr, amongst many other sources for clips, and photos, but Picas is just as good and perhaps has more help because its googles own system, Picasa works very well with Apples iPhoto and the export to Picasa works a dream.

I use Google documents for a lot of simple letter writing of fleshing out, and Apples iWorks for major graphics works of art such as my CV and other arty items, as the interface between iPhoto is so slick, even as I have two iPhoto files, one for work and one for pleasure and family. but both are located as separate files on Picasa, and the work is also on Flickr. So I have perhaps a great backup system for photos, and no server problems.

Does this apply to video, of course. Why not take video shots of a site, it says so much more, and store them on sites such as viddler, set the share to friends and limit who can actually see it.

Architectural Technologist – Wall Insertion Options for Symbols Vectorworks 2010

Again as we wait for 2010 to ship, why not have a look at some of the new features, this one is from Jon Pickup of Archoncad, its a small but useful tip to control the insertion point of any object. Now talking with Jon this morning, he tells me that as soon as we have all upgraded to 2010, we will need to update our symbol files to take account of this new feature, and clever Jon has made a short Vectorscript tool to make this a simple one click operation, and he has allowed me to almost give it away, I will be uploading this to the download file tab as soon as I get Vectrworks 2010, for the small price of your email address., keep looking out for updates on this over the next week or so.

Architectural Technologist - windmill_1

I know that Vectorworks 2010 has not shipped yet, although we know whats coming. But we can start to look at some of the features in a little more depth so were ready for the new upload. John Pickup of Archoncad has does a lot so far, and this little tip should help a lot, its about wall joining, I think its a nice little tip.

I recently played golf with a local Ironmongery supplier and met a guy who was the brother of an Architect I used to work with called Hamish Simpson, who painted this windmill in about 1976

Architectural Technologist – Kissing Gate

September 22, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Kissing gate

I suppose this photo is not really that of a kissing gate, but it acts like one, but there is no swing gate, I hear you cry, correct, thats because this is not a gate to keep animals out, or in, but a gate to slow people down, it makes you or I have to manoeuver around an obstical, and therefore make us aware of the path ahead, and in this instance it a path from a common area, that leads onto a main road, so as you pass through the gate, you slow, become aware of the road and take action, other than that its a nice feature to the end of a corker path,
