This blog is in support of Blog action day, 2009 and climate change, now this site is alway putting items up for climate change, and if you search for climate change you will see all items connected with this subject.

Perhaps the biggest item I can see embracing climate change is the smart grid and PV cell technology

Leo Laporte - Let's Wiggle Stuff

I have posted the This Week In Google podcast, before and will continue to do so, it’s just excellent CPD, ok so it concentrates on Google, but it’s so important to me in my every day life and work, that I just have to keep up with the constant changing goal post, that is google,  This week in Google part of the ever growing Leo Laporte empire is just the best show about, So Leo was away this week, that does not detract from the quality of this show, I even stayed up late last night, UK time 22:15 to see the start,on the impressive twit TV

OK so this is not Architecture, it’s all about the web and the new html 5 standard, but watch the video below, its all about the new features you will be seeing this year, and I think it opens the way for some very cool applications which are browser based, such as CAD programs, Autocad, we have een recently is looking at this, and others will go, it opens up a lot of interesting ways to share drawings, map, and other web pages. Its also about presentation and thats of interest to us all, every practice should have a web page with cad and video’s of current and past projects.

Click on the video and see the google youtube video see how wide and big it is, is this a new screen !

The video is not short at about an hour long, but stick with it, its interesting and will allow you to see were the browsers are heading.

Architectural Technologist – Google Earth Will Track Cars and People In Real Time, Eventually Destroy Privacy

October 2, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Now this is not just scarey, but dam interesting, and scarey, But for Architecture it could be a most usefull piece of technology, it’s one of the awesomestest and scariestest technology demonstrations I’ve seen in a long while: Georgia Institute of Technology’s students are using CCTV video to map actual vehicles and people into Google Earth. Why is this scary?

Right now, all the data displayed is anonymous, which makes up for a cool looking technology. You could see a football game in real time or the actual traffic in your route to work. Eventually, you will be able to see clouds moving, the weather changing, and even birds move in real time.

Now, put on your plastic saftey hat and imagine.

Imagine that someone is able to tag you in some way. In theory, it could be as easy as having access to one of the CCTV cameras and this system. You mark a car on the screen and, provided that you have enough cameras along the way, the technology would be able to follow the vehicle wherever it goes. In England, for example, this will be really easy to do, because there are CCTV cameras absolutely everywhere. And let’s not talk about RFID tags.

Of course, I’m sure that no government agency will be interested in using this for controlling someone’s movements. Why would they?

Architectural Technologist – Google Wave

Google Wave Demo

I have heard , watched and read so much about Google Wave, that I can’t wait for it to be launched, and if the gossip sites have it right, then it’s going to be released on the 30-09-09 and watch email change.

In fact watch many exchanges of information systems change, as people see the way Wave works, I can see the filing and drawing exchange of Architecture change

Architectural Technologist – Photo storage

September 28, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

One of the most disc hungry activities any office will have to overcome is that of photos, I seem to remember that my last major office, had loads of storage via servers, but we constantly had to thin out site photos because the server was full, CD’s were packed out and stored in a files for some use later, what a waste, when for just no cost Google Picasa or Flickr could have be used,

I like Flickr, just because the writing package I use Zemanta, which is a WordPress Google gmail and Firefox add-on, works with Flickr, amongst many other sources for clips, and photos, but Picas is just as good and perhaps has more help because its googles own system, Picasa works very well with Apples iPhoto and the export to Picasa works a dream.

I use Google documents for a lot of simple letter writing of fleshing out, and Apples iWorks for major graphics works of art such as my CV and other arty items, as the interface between iPhoto is so slick, even as I have two iPhoto files, one for work and one for pleasure and family. but both are located as separate files on Picasa, and the work is also on Flickr. So I have perhaps a great backup system for photos, and no server problems.

Does this apply to video, of course. Why not take video shots of a site, it says so much more, and store them on sites such as viddler, set the share to friends and limit who can actually see it.
