Architectural Technologist – Timber Kissing gate

Kissing gate triangle

I know I have done the before, but one of the items I had to pass through to get to the Roman fort at Birdoswald was this fine example of a new kissing gate, in its basic form its a straight square kissing gate, but the designer has inserted a triangle line of timber to stop the sheep having any chance of escape.

Architectural Technologist – Vectorworks Archoncad training

Population growth of European countries

Is it that time of the month already, Jon Pickup of Archoncad has just sent me this months invite to his short sharp training, there is one specifically for Europe, ie the times good but I can’t make it so I am attending the Friday night session, (16th Oct 2009) a bit late but its one of those must attend trainings.

The topic this month is Vectorworks 2010. Should you upgrade? Vectorworks now upgrades on an annual cycle, so every year we look at the new version. ONLY you can decide if the upgrades are worth it, but I wanted to show you as much as I can to help you decide. There are some fantastic new features, and some that look small, but i think will save you a lot of time and aggravation.

I subscribe to loads of podcasts but perhaps the hubblecast is one of the best, the photos that this hunk os science floating in space sends to us is nothing more than stunning, and the narative that Dr jay gives is just great. No CPD here through just interesting Science. Search iTunes for Hubblecast to find more.

Architectural Technologist – iJoist end support for loft convertions

Well some items in the post can prove useful, and this little gem from Simpson Strong tie is one of those little gems that makes life easy. I do a lot of loft convertions and the problem is alway getting in steel to the loft area, I split it, and try to keep the weight down, recently I have started using ijoists, but as alway, there is a little snag and thats the end of joist detail at the eaves, with steel , I have a nice cut away detail that almost always works, but cutting iJoists needs a little more care, and this two piece metal reinforcement for the cut end of an iJoist is the answer, I like this and will start to specify it were I use iJoists.

I followed the article and went into Google to search for more info on this subject, and spent a good 1/2 hour of CPD checking out their claims and other manufacturers of iJoist to see if I could improve on my spec.

This blog is in support of Blog action day, 2009 and climate change, now this site is alway putting items up for climate change, and if you search for climate change you will see all items connected with this subject.

Perhaps the biggest item I can see embracing climate change is the smart grid and PV cell technology

Architectural Technologist – Vectorworks printing two sheet layers side by side

I saw a twitter recently on the subjects of printing two Vectorworks sheet layers side by side, and thought I would do a short video to  show how I would do it. Why you might ask do it this way, well perhaps you want to give an exhibition of your work and show two or even three sheets on a continuous banner . My method is simple and it works, with the least amount of bother.

Architectural Technologist – This week in Google

Leo Laporte - Let's Wiggle Stuff

I have posted the This Week In Google podcast, before and will continue to do so, it’s just excellent CPD, ok so it concentrates on Google, but it’s so important to me in my every day life and work, that I just have to keep up with the constant changing goal post, that is google,  This week in Google part of the ever growing Leo Laporte empire is just the best show about, So Leo was away this week, that does not detract from the quality of this show, I even stayed up late last night, UK time 22:15 to see the start,on the impressive twit TV

Architectural Technologist – iPhone stand

October 12, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

iPhone stand 2

Ok so this is not Architectural CPD, but its one of those neet little tips that just makes life easy, and this stand for the iPhone is so simple to make, the author Jason Fitzpatrick,   uses plastic acrylic sheet, but I used a piece of card from an amazon book delivery, its quite still and did the job just as well. I suppose if you really want 10 mins of CPD you could draw out the profiles ,print to an A4 sheet and cut out, but that’s really grabbing time.

The photo today is the one i made, it works, don’t mock ! more photos on the flickr site
