Architectural Technologist – 3D Printing Model Stairs with a makerbot

November 7, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

remember my blog about 3D printing of a staircase to 1/4 inch scale with a Makerbot, well owenscenic has produced a little video of it actually working,. This is certainly worth checking, out. As he says its a little rought, but perhaps with time it will get up to presentation quality, but the best part is that its created with Vectorworks. Have a look at the other videos re making and testing the makerbot.

I saw a twitter recently on the subjects of printing two Vectorworks sheet layers side by side, and thought I would do a short video to  show how I would do it. Why you might ask do it this way, well perhaps you want to give an exhibition of your work and show two or even three sheets on a continuous banner . My method is simple and it works, with the least amount of bother.

I know that Vectorworks 2010 has not shipped yet, although we know whats coming. But we can start to look at some of the features in a little more depth so were ready for the new upload. John Pickup of Archoncad has does a lot so far, and this little tip should help a lot, its about wall joining, I think its a nice little tip.

I recently played golf with a local Ironmongery supplier and met a guy who was the brother of an Architect I used to work with called Hamish Simpson, who painted this windmill in about 1976

Architectural Technologist – Vectorworks and sheet names

Vectorworks File Names

Up until very recently, I have been a 2D user of Vectorworks, I survey a property and use Vectorworks, much like a drawing board, and its very easy to use it like this, I pick the pen size and start drawing, layering each floor plan as a separate design layer, and classing out the various components as I go, I started to use Viewports as soon as I got V12 I think, and loved the way I could use them, and with Jon Pickups help I started to refine the way I used viewports and class structures to ease and quicken my drawing, even using spreadsheets to list items such as car park spaces. But one thing bugged me this is Vectorworks ability to list design layers in the right order,. I wanted them in a specific way in the drop box, and after a short while I saw that each design layer in the tool / Organise menu has little numbers against them, clicking and dragging allowed me to change the order and keep my sanity, I was happy, until I saw that there was no such method in the sheet layer section of organiser, . Now at this stage I was producing a lot of PDF documents/books of projects and having to organise the list so it started with the title page, went on to the ground. first and subsequent sheet layer  in an ordered way, via the export/pdf batch commant.

Then I had a brain wave, if I numbered them in a specific way would they re order , would Vectorworks sort them correctly, and it did, so I know list each sheet, with its project number/sheet number and sheet name 159856-01 location plan, and doing a batch pdf export the list is correct and no need to sort manualy,,, I am happy again. I made a little clip to show just what I mean, have a look, top right. It might play but double click and it will take you to Flickr and play it there.

Apple have just announce the availability of the new MobileMe iDisk app for iPhone and iPod touch.

The iDisk app lets you access your iDisk folders and view files in formats supported by iPhone OS 3.0 including iWork, Microsoft Office, PDF, QuickTime, and more. The app also makes it easy to share files from anywhere. In just a few taps, you can email a link that lets friends and colleagues download a file directly from your iDisk. To learn more, watch the tutorial.

MobileMe iDisk app is available now as a free download from the App Store. Before you install it, please make sure you are running iPhone OS 3.0 on your iPhone or iPod touch.

Now this is not the same as Dropbox , but it opens up a useful method of securely sharing files that need no interaction, other than to be viewed or shared

Architectural Technologist – Review of Jon Pickups 3D Modeling in Vectorworks

August 4, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

I am delighted to say that I will be reviewing Jon Pickup’s recent book “3D Modeling in Vectorworks”, I have used and learned 3D but have never really put it into practice with any furor, but the time is right to implement it in a serious way, and Jons book is going to be the bible, I’ll follow it in detail and report my findings as I go in a series of blogs. There will be other reviews I’m sure, but they wil be coming from serious 3D contenders, Architects and Technologists who are already very at ease with 3D, I will tell it as it is, at the grass roots. Jons tutorials have always been interesting, and so informative, and I can imagine the quality of his book, I’m looking forward to it.
