I always take a photo of any job I have to survey to measure just how many bricks there are the the set measure. in this case it was 6 courses to 420mm so any photo I have taken of the exterior, I can get a pretty good idea of heights of window cills, what ever, even eaves heights.

Architectural Technologist – Interesting brick corbled detail

Corbled brick detail

I recently did a survey of an old pub, and saw this detail, although its a classic corbled detail, the brickwork under the old roof truss, is not really doing anything, it’s there for show, the beam if you look carefully, sits on the main exterior wall, which is actually new brickwork, if fact the complete barn is new, made to look old, more photos of the pub on my flickr account

Some of you just might have thought the H+ magazine article was just to far forward, but have a look at this new initiative, pads in the pavement that generate power, straight form the pages of sci-fi, yet a reality, check out Pavegen read the article and then tell me sci-fi is not important.

Jon Pickup has produced yet another classic youtube video, that explains the align plane tool in Vectorworks 2010. Making the placement of library objects a bit easier.

Architectural Technologist – Interbuild

Is this the way to spend a morning, did I get what I wanted from my visit to interbuild, not a chance, it was the most poorly set up and badly attended show I have ever been to, is it a result of the market place, or are manufacturers looking for alternative ways to spend their advertising money. A little of the alternatives and a huge pinch of the market conditions I think, but overall I thought it was a particularly huge waste of my time. Perhaps the only redeeming feature was the IT area, and the CU stand, were I managed to see the Vectorworks 2010 presentation from Tamsin Slatter.

Can I claim any CPD, well yes, but not a lot, I did see some products that might just qualify, such as a very poor stand on solar PV panels with a chap so board, no thinking on it, I will not claim any CPD from this trip.

Architectural Technologist – Timber Kissing gate

Kissing gate triangle

I know I have done the before, but one of the items I had to pass through to get to the Roman fort at Birdoswald was this fine example of a new kissing gate, in its basic form its a straight square kissing gate, but the designer has inserted a triangle line of timber to stop the sheep having any chance of escape.
More photos are now on the Scays Flickr account

Architectural Technologist – Vectorworks printing two sheet layers side by side

I saw a twitter recently on the subjects of printing two Vectorworks sheet layers side by side, and thought I would do a short video to  show how I would do it. Why you might ask do it this way, well perhaps you want to give an exhibition of your work and show two or even three sheets on a continuous banner . My method is simple and it works, with the least amount of bother.

Architectural Technologist – HTML5

OK so this is not Architecture, it’s all about the web and the new html 5 standard, but watch the video below, its all about the new features you will be seeing this year, and I think it opens the way for some very cool applications which are browser based, such as CAD programs, Autocad, we have een recently is looking at this, and others will go, it opens up a lot of interesting ways to share drawings, map, and other web pages. Its also about presentation and thats of interest to us all, every practice should have a web page with cad and video’s of current and past projects.

Click on the video and see the google youtube video see how wide and big it is, is this a new screen !

The video is not short at about an hour long, but stick with it, its interesting and will allow you to see were the browsers are heading.
