Architectural Technologist – Vectorscript for plugins

Should we get involved with Vectorscript, I think so, looking at the work Jon Pickup has done recently on new scripts for Vectorworks 2010, although listening to jon, he has been using it for some time to automate several small but labour intensive actions within Vectorworks. My last video we looked at the insertion point with a new plugin for vectorworks 2010, and to make this work just right for your class list, you will have to get into the script and change a line of code, this is not difficult, Jon has kindly gone through it and in this small video, he shows exactly how to access the script, and which line to change.

Remember if you want to receive the Vectorworks 2010 plugin to change the insertion point go to the link below and leave your email address, and I will send as soon as its available.

Architectural Technologist – Robo Uncycle

September 26, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

robocycle

This just has to be a winner, its innovation at its best, I love this, the idea, the way its put together, and the thinking that just must have gone on to come up with something so ordinary, It has robotics all over it, but its no more than a wheel chair, on as the name implies a Robo Unicycle. Any cpd, there must be, follow through the idea of gyro devise, battery storage, the CAD drawing of it, but innovation has to be the best bet,

Architectural Technologist Download – pitched roof bits

pitched roof bits

I often have to go searching for a particular tile style and I have found a few that more or less cover every one I have had to cover in a section, so I have put them together in a single Vectorworks files for you to use,. They are all 2D of course, but work quite well, I think most came from a dwg file way in the past, but I think they are ok.

Do you have some 2D or 3D details to share, please drop me am Email with them on, I will give full credits if you want, for the details and your country, quite important the last bit to see just how different countries detail .

Architectural Technologist – Archoncad September online Tutorial – Camera match

September 16, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

panzercad

This morning I attended an online meet with Jon Pickup of Archoncad, this month Jon went over the use of Panzercad, Camera match program a really useful and easy to use piece of software that works within Vectorworks. Basically its a way of applying a 3D image you might have generated within Vectorworks and applying it to an existing photo. If you try to do this manually witin Photoshop then the problem will always be perspective, but camera match overcomes this in a very simple program, .

First take the photo, noting and straight lines, that panzercad might be able to use to calculate viewpoints, also a note a dimension, then apply this photo, set up the points within Vectorworks and apply the model, it sounds simple, and it is, although  it took about 45 min of Jon going through it all, I can imagine that given a couple of attempts, this is no more than a 20 min exercise.. Ok you might want to take the photo into Photoshop to clean it up a little, take out objects in the foreground that might not be wanted, but thats it, import it into the application and apply your model. a real plus when going to see your client, or planner.

Have a look at the web site and watch a couple of the movies, it’s just so easy

Architectural Technologist – Gate Post capping

September 16, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Gate pillar with nice brick capp detail

I liked this little detail to the top of a gate post, its all in brick and there are about 8 different gates and most of them have this detail, I spoke to one of the old gardeners and to his knowledge there are no repairs to this since it was built nearly 200 years ago, can’t be bad, good quality mortar, and time taken to get it right, no rushing to beat the deadline, oh and the bricks were local to the site, clay dug from a local pit, mixed and fired on site.

Architectural Technologist – Archoncad Vector-Workout 2010

September 16, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Vectorworks File Names

There can be no mistake, this time Jon Pickup of Archoncad, has surpassed his own records and produced one of the best buys on the planet, I am not lazy, well that’s what I tell my partner !, I like reading and devour books, but some times I want instant knowledge, I don’t want to have to ring up a help line and wait, or sift through a text book, I want to know the answer to my problem now. In the past I have relied on helpful co-workers, but even they can’t always help, so when Jon showed me his first 2009 version of Vector-Workout, I thought this is it, and asked to be allowed to sell it as well as use it, but then as the days were rolling up to the release day for Vectorworks 2010, I saw the new version and was blown away, not only had he redone all the videos, learning from the first edition, but he has added just loads more into the easy to navigate pdf file. BIM is also evolving quickly, and now is the time to get onboard, follow the manual file by file, or click on and item to skip, its that easy.  If you purchased the last version, then this will certainly be on your radar, and I have it for sale in the store for $119 and a simple click on the Paypall button will allow me to send the files via  Dropsend or filesend, its just to big to attach to an Email

Architectural Technologist – Eaves stepped brick detail

September 10, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Eaves stepped brick detail

I again was out walking with my dogs and saw this detail, on an old barn, there are two things to look at here and research, first is the very old fasiond eaves corbelled brick detail, It helps support the tile or as in most cases a slate tile finish, it helps keep the interface joint between slate and brickwork dry and sheds water coming of the roof away from the wall slightly. But best of all I like its style, it looks good.

But the other point to look for in this photo, is the spalding brick face, now this could have been caused by a number of conditions, but proberly the most common, is water trapped below the surface which has been frozen and forced of the face of the brick, how did the water get there, more than likely bad pointing, allowing water to seep down into the brick, hard to tell from the photo, but I had a good look and I believe this was the cause, Remedy is to hack out the brick carefully and replace, using the same mortar, lime in this case, and re point the whole wall.

I had a link from Jon Pickup of Archoncad recently, he has just converted some existing plans available on envirographics to Vectorworks fomat, they are for the hot climates, but might be a nice addition to any library if you want to show an exotic plants. As far as I know there are two available, Callistemon Kings Park Special, and a fern, see photo. both are free to download. which are alo available in Photoshop, Archicad, Sketchup and a couple more formats.

Architectural Technologist – Convert to lines No 37 The Seatle area Vectorworks user Group

September 6, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Tom Greggs

Its been a while, but Ton Greggs of the Seattle VectorWorks Users Group and Northwest VectorWorks users. has posted a great issue, stacked with intereting items

• New free 3D video
• Axio into Perspective
• Successful DTM’ing
• The history of VectorWorks
• New video from NNA
• CONfused about BIM?
• Vwks VS SketchUp
• Importing your own stuff
• Late breaking news on Snow Leopard (Mac OS) & Vwks 2009 compatability
• Healing oneself

The Video, although you have to download it from Toms .Mac site is a real belter, Tom has a nice easy going style thats just oooozing with confidence, this week he starts to look at 3D, I know others have published on this mater, but its a different way of approaching this subject and I’m all for a different view point. I have spoken to Tom and with a bit of luck, I will help Tom get it up onto Viddler or another service provider, to make viewing easier.
