I saw a twitter recently on the subjects of printing two Vectorworks sheet layers side by side, and thought I would do a short video to  show how I would do it. Why you might ask do it this way, well perhaps you want to give an exhibition of your work and show two or even three sheets on a continuous banner . My method is simple and it works, with the least amount of bother.

Architectural Technologist – iPhone stand

iPhone stand 2

Ok so this is not Architectural CPD, but its one of those neet little tips that just makes life easy, and this stand for the iPhone is so simple to make, the author Jason Fitzpatrick,   uses plastic acrylic sheet, but I used a piece of card from an amazon book delivery, its quite still and did the job just as well. I suppose if you really want 10 mins of CPD you could draw out the profiles ,print to an A4 sheet and cut out, but that’s really grabbing time.

The photo today is the one i made, it works, don’t mock ! more photos on the flickr site

I was particularly pleased today, to see that the AATO & CIAT have signed a memorandum of agreement to promote mutual recognition of qualifications and experience. This is one of the most important leaps our profession has made, and I hope we will see more such links in the future, to establish the practice of Architectural Technology around the globe.

A full article can be seen in this month AT magazine, As of this morning a PDF copy of the current issue is not yet on the CIAT web site, but past issues are available here.  Whilst your reading the issue, have a look at Keith Snook HonMCIAT RIBA director of Research and Technical excellent review of BIM igniting imagination creating success published by Autodesk,

OK so this is not Architecture, it’s all about the web and the new html 5 standard, but watch the video below, its all about the new features you will be seeing this year, and I think it opens the way for some very cool applications which are browser based, such as CAD programs, Autocad, we have een recently is looking at this, and others will go, it opens up a lot of interesting ways to share drawings, map, and other web pages. Its also about presentation and thats of interest to us all, every practice should have a web page with cad and video’s of current and past projects.

Click on the video and see the google youtube video see how wide and big it is, is this a new screen !

The video is not short at about an hour long, but stick with it, its interesting and will allow you to see were the browsers are heading.

Architectural Technologist – Googlewave

October 1, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

No I did not get an invite to wave, I put my name down, but as yet nothing through the gmail, but I live an hope. But does this stop me from mentioning it, absolutely not, have a look at the YouTube video, below, it just emphasises the way I think Wave will affect Architecture and running of projects, loading files and reports up for all to see, no backup problems and realtime feed back, excellent.

Dropbox App

Well at long last, I saw a note via my Email to say that the new Dropbox app is out for the iphone, I am very pleased this is a long awaited app that will help on the move, logging in is so simple, just entre your email address, and your password and all my files are shown. Just as a test I dropped a multi page pdf generated by Vectorworks into my drop box and seconds later its there, I opened it up and all pages are working fine, zoom in in the normal way and line come into focus within less than a second, excellent, and a great way to have all your current project pdf drawings live.

Want to try it out, link via the advert on the side,  its well worth the small effort to gain access, and for a small user its free.

Architectural Technologist – Small Timber Frame Project

October 1, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

I got an interesting email from Webnash Design and build recenty on a timber-framed project they are engaged in, its not so much the design, more the construction technique I like, a very good set of photos to wander across, from design drawings to rendered drawings to the final dry fit in their yard, to the actual site assembly, plus a whole heap more. Worth 1/2 hour CPD of my time, just looking at the detail and the jointing methods, fortunately the photos are good enough to zoom in and see the detail.

Architectural Technologist – Vectorscript for plugins

September 29, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Vectorworks File Names

Should we get involved with Vectorscript, I think so, looking at the work Jon Pickup has done recently on new scripts for Vectorworks 2010, although listening to jon, he has been using it for some time to automate several small but labour intensive actions within Vectorworks. My last video we looked at the insertion point with a new plugin for vectorworks 2010, and to make this work just right for your class list, you will have to get into the script and change a line of code, this is not difficult, Jon has kindly gone through it and in this small video, he shows exactly how to access the script, and which line to change.

Remember if you want to receive the Vectorworks 2010 plugin to change the insertion point go to the link below and leave your email address, and I will send as soon as its available.

Architectural Technologist - windmill_1

I know that Vectorworks 2010 has not shipped yet, although we know whats coming. But we can start to look at some of the features in a little more depth so were ready for the new upload. John Pickup of Archoncad has does a lot so far, and this little tip should help a lot, its about wall joining, I think its a nice little tip.

I recently played golf with a local Ironmongery supplier and met a guy who was the brother of an Architect I used to work with called Hamish Simpson, who painted this windmill in about 1976

I may have been away from my machine over the weekend, watching Rugby in Exeter, but Jon Pickup of Archoncad has certainly been hard at it, with a number of good videos to watch, this one I found particularly interesting, as I used it on a job I am currently working on for foul and storm drains,

As for todays picture, why not, I liked it and thought you might to .
