I am a major fan of the BE2Camp unconference theme, its just a very cool and simple way to meet and listern to very good presentations, the one I attended in Birmingham was just very good, I’m only sorry I did not get chance to travel to London to the recent event there, but this new Ecocamp looks to be just the ticket. I certainly have mine booked and will be there.

Be2camp member Carmen Boscolo is organising EcoCamp in Coventry, UK, on Saturday 12 December and its sustainability theme may well appeal to many Be2camp people, including some of those who attended Be2camp Brum in August. We are working in partnership with EcoCamp to promote the event, and you can register to attend at www.ecocamp.ning.com.

Jonathan Pickup's Second Edition of Vectorworks Architect and Essentials Tutorials Now Available

November 2, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks

Jonathan Pickup’s Second Edition of Vectorworks Architect and Essentials Tutorials Now Available
Columbia, Maryland (October 26, 2009)—Nemetschek North America is pleased to announce that the second edition of Vectorworks Architect and Essentials Tutorial manuals from Jonathan Pickup are now available for purchase. These tutorials offer Vectorworks® software users a different and effective method of learning, combining step-by-step instructions written in a conversational tone with movies. The tutorials are based on version 2010 but can be used successfully with prior versions of Vectorworks software.
The Vectorworks Essentials Tutorial Manual is a must-have workbook for anyone new to Vectorworks. The aim of this manual is to eliminate the mystery of computer-aided design and to give an understanding of how to use Vectorworks. It’s designed to build a foundation of essential Vectorworks knowledge to include simple 2D drafting, 3D modeling, file organization concepts, and how to draw a simple building.
The Vectorworks Architect Tutorial Manual is a thorough "project-based" training workbook. The manual walks users through a domestic project and takes them through the process of documenting the existing site and building, preparing and presenting proposed renovations, and finally, creating the working drawings. Along the way there will also be strategies highlighted for creating concepts quickly and checking them in 3D.
These intelligent and approachable instructional manuals are appropriate for both students and professionals and provide a very practical approach to learning the software. The hard-copy workbooks come with a companion CD that contains exercise files for multiple versions of Vectorworks software (2008, 2009, and 2010 formats). The entire manual is also included on the CD as a PDF file with embedded instructional movies. Each workbook retails for $75 plus shipping and handling.
"The tutorial is very thorough, and I appreciate the site survey and topographical guidance," says Lloyd Brown of Highdesert Design Studio in Albuquerque New Mexico. "It has helped me greatly in increasing my productivity and efficiency in using Vectorworks."
To get a sense of the author’s style and approach, Vectorworks users are encouraged to read the sample chapters and table of contents posted on the website.
The workbooks are part of Nemetschek North America’s self-paced training options. These training materials are for people who like to learn on their own, and at their own pace. For more information and to purchase the manuals authored by Jonathan Pickup, please go to www.nemetschek.net/training/guides.php.

I have posted the This Week In Google podcast, before and will continue to do so, it’s just excellent CPD, ok so it concentrates on Google, but it’s so important to me in my every day life and work, that I just have to keep up with the constant changing goal post, that is google,  This week in Google part of the ever growing Leo Laporte empire is just the best show about, So Leo was away this week, that does not detract from the quality of this show, I even stayed up late last night, UK time 22:15 to see the start,on the impressive twit TV

Architectural Technologist – UK’s New Wind-Powered Vehicle Breaks Previous Land Speed Record!

You may wonder why mention this on an Architectural Technologists CPD web site, easy, is innovation, design, at its best, its all about looking at a problems from alternative angles and using new science, materials to achieve the almost impossible, oh and its British, sorry for mentioning it here when I aspire to a global audience, but it does fell kind of good.

So whats it al about, well it’s the breaking of the wind powered land speed record, and in a machine that may not be ready for mass production, but it certainly shows all the aspects of innovation that I look for and seek.

I got this from a twitterer emlink3 who pointed me to a site  called stumbleupon.com now I get so many tweets it  is hard to sieve out things that are interesting, particularly when they are not in my usual tagged search’s so its good I saw it. but go to the site and read the blurb, but more important watch the video, its all there. also go to the web page http://greenopolis.com/ theres more to see and read on green issues here, nice 1/2 green CPD

As for the phot, it all starts here,

But does this stop me from mentioning it, absolutely not, have a look at the YouTube video, below, it just emphasises the way I think Wave will affect Architecture and running of projects, loading files and reports up for all to see, no backup problems and realtime feed back, excellent.

I saw an an recently for the new Marley Pitched roofing guide, I phoned the number and spoke to there office requesting a copy of the book, now having dealt with other manufacturers recently, I thought to myself, yeh, I’ll see that book someday, but to my surprise and glee, it arrived the next day, excellent service, and not only that, the book was, is, every inch what I was hoping to see, the best update on pitched roofing ever, all you would wish to see, plus more, and to boot a very useful CD packed with details, ok it’s in dwg, and I have to import them, sorry guys at Marley dwg is not the only CAD file format. But that aside, it is truly worth getting this excellent guide. Go to their web site and link into the pitched roofing and brochure request or simply phone the number you see and talk to the very nice lady.

Architectural Technologist – Voip Google voice gmail and my needs

When will google voice come to the UK, I’m fed up listerning to Leo Laport and others go on about how good it is, I want now. but best of all, I want Skype to expand to cover this area, maybe now they are away from ebay, thinks could expand, I certainly hope so, the quality of Skype video and voice over what Google can offer is a large gap, but |I like gmail, so somewhere the two have to come together, if gmail can answer my skype  office calls whist I’m away, then this will be very cool, I can easily pick up and control voice mail this way

Architectural Technologist – Vectorworks 2010. VIP presentations

Well things are starting to hot up, I have just picked up a link to the presentation videos, now available on the NNS web site, they are in Quicktime format and show the opening intro and a series of presentations on the new features of, Architect, Landmark & Spotlight

It starts of with a quick over view and a very swift look at some of the feature, I say swift, but not light, as NNA have packed in some real interesting things into this opening presentation. The remaining videos are more in detail, but equally as interesting, although I don’t use Spotlight or Landmark. but Architect more than makes up for this.

Take for instance BIM, we seen this take off in the past year or so and it now takes centre stage, but its within 3D I was most amazed, with 3D snapping,  working planes, and Planar Graphics,, the simple demo, is really cool and will make 3D easier I’m sure.
