Archiectural Technologist – Fonts, an expression of who you are

September 25, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks by CADcaster

Helvetica Poster

I have just watched, Helvetica, the film, I purchased it on iTunes library and put it onto my iPhone for viewing on a trip I made yesterday, hence the lack of any post, I was amazed at the influence this simple clean font has made to the world. The film is I suppose, is a documentary, of the people who use it, and the history of the people who created it, plus, I might add, a small number of people who rebel against it, It’s a film that we as Architectural technologists should watch, Our drawings and details should reflect something of our character in them,.When I first started, I was taught to write in a clear upright way, so my drawings were clear, and reflected the office I worked for. Doug Patt of How to Architect has a useful video on Youtube, I don’t like the way he writes in this, but its his style and he likes it. I prefer to use lines, this is good, but uses a square to line with, NO, not so good. You should line, and write freestyle, but how can I criticise, my father write like this, its very popular.

So now we are in the 21st century, and most if not all of us use CAD, I wanted to continue my style, and choose a font that I think reflected me,and my writing, and picked Tekton Pro, designed  by David Siegel, in the USA, is a good clean font that looks good on my drawings, its available from just about any font web site, I recently have been buying from Fonts.com, they have a very easy to use interface and loads of similar fonts, like Architectural package by Kasier Rae,  or Stylus BT. Your just going to have to wander about and find a font that suites you, but above all, choose a font, do not rely upon the default set by the CAD package. Do we design our drawings as pieces of art, yes, of course we do, I always like to send out drawings that look good, I want people to say, that its a nice drawing,, a technologist was behind this.

Perhaps I should write my own font , I will call it Architectural Technologist, I had a long search, of almost 10 mins to see if any one else had made a font called Architectural Technologist, and there is none, so here  on this site I register it’s name and in the coming weeks I will list a new font for the technologist based upon my writing style.

So watch the film, is it CPD, yes, its design, learn the difference between fonts, and just what an impact a different font can make to a drawing, and to you.

Far Process Summary

September 16, 2009 in AutoCAD, CAD, Revit by CADcaster

The intention of this blog is to provide you with an overview of the FAR Process and describe how your company can automate the creation of Revit Families as well as manage your library of Revit Families more efficiently and effectively utilizing the FAR Process.

The objectives of the FAR Process are:

  • To create a Revit Family automatically that is usable, maintainable and sustainable throughout the life of the building project.
  • To create a tool for Manufacturers to manage/control their product data for Architects using the BIM format without being dependent upon an outside provider to create and maintain their Revit families.
  • To create an automated Revit Family created that includes product data provided directly from the Manufacturer and is ready to be downloaded into BIM projects.

Overview of the FAR Process:

The FAR Process is built from 3 main components:

1. FAR Creator
2. FAR Data Set

3. FAR Manager

The FAR Creator is not just one application. It is a set of API’s that will be built for each Manufacturer based on their software and their industry. The FAR Creator takes the product data provided by the Manufacturer to create the FAR Data Set required for the FAR Process.

  • Each Manufacturer will be able to use their own set of API’s to create the FAR Data Set necessary for automating the creation of their own Revit families, from their own manufacturing data using the FAR Process for custom and future product developments.
  • The FAR Creator allows the Manufacturer to have the ability for updating architect data automatically when changes are made to the engineering data.

The FAR Data Set is a text file that contains the product data and instructions for the FAR Manager.

The FAR Manager uses the FAR Data Set to create a Revit Family within Revit. The FAR Manager also includes a Content Manager interface which allows the user to manage their families within their own file system

We have 4 short video segments on YouTube demonstrating the capabilities of the FAR Manager; BIM Manager Utility Tool and the ability to create a Revit Family from an Inventor file.

Click on the following links to see the YouTube video clips:

1.) FAR Manager Search capabilities
2.) FAR Manager – Importing Types capabilities
3.) BIM Manager Utility Tool capabilities
4.) creating a Revit Family from an Inventor file

Contact us to discuss how you can begin automating Revit Families for your company with the FAR Process.

Comments about Short Sharp Training

September 16, 2009 in CAD, Vectorworks by CADcaster

I’ve been working hard on the monthly newsletter each month and it’s nice to get some positive feedback. This comment came from a new user, who has already watched all my youtube movies.

Hi Jonathan,

I have watched all of the available training and am amazed at the clarity with which you explain the concepts in your training videos and the ease of understanding.
I am officially a Pickup training junkie and would like to thank you for making these available.

Again gratitude,

Simon P.

As most in the UK will know, Interbuild at the NEC is about to decend upon us 18th – 21st October. I have started to make plans already, looking at the exhibitor list and seeing just who is there and what are my priorities. Very pleased to see that CU will be there with Vectorworks. Have you logged on to the site recently, load or what, very nice.

I shall be tweeting as much as I can, and loading up pictures to my FLickr account of sites, people and items.  I will also take the new camera and get some footage down as well. You’ll have to check out my youtube account at youtube.com/scays and don’t forget I have also started to list items at Viddler
